Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
THE medium-sized premium SUV class is busier than ever, and the Stelvio is Alfa Romeo’s take on the formula. It’s a great car to look at; it’s a sporty, muscular design that turns heads. Good design and materials are spread throughout the interior.
It falls short of the Audi Q5 for quality, but it’s still a lovely place to sit.
There’s the high driving position you’d expect from an SUV, but while space is competitive, it’s far from class-leading. A six-foot passenger can comfortably sit behind a similarly tall driver, but once seated the feeling is more of being cocooned than having room to stretch out. At least standard kit is generous across the range.
Engines comprise a 207bhp 2.2-litre diesel and a 276bhp 2.0-litre petrol, which provide a good blend of performance and economy, while the high-performance Quadrifoglio has a 503bhp twin-turbo V6. An eight-speed auto gearbox is standard on all cars, while most are 4WD.
Even as standard the Stelvio is great to drive. It’s manoeuvrable and light on its feet, yet the Alfa is comfortable over longer distances.
Overall, the Stelvio is an exciting addition to the premium compact SUV class. It’s close to the default German choices for quality and efficiency, and treats buyers to a dose of Italian passion too.
+ Fantastic design, great to drive, frugal diesel
- Practicality ,no manual gearbox, unproven reliability
Rating 3.9/5
